Equipment

  • Candy Thermometer
  • Wooden Sticks
  • Parchment Paper

Ingredients

Candy Coating

  • 6 medium apples Granny Smith or Honeycrisp
  • 6 wooden sticks
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • pink and blue food coloring gel or any cotton candy-inspired colors
  • cotton candy-flavored extract optional
  • edible glitter or sprinkles optional

Instructions

  • Wash apples thoroughly to remove wax. Dry completely and insert wooden sticks into the top of each apple.
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar, corn syrup, water, and cream of tartar. Stir until sugar dissolves, then stop stirring.
  • Boil the mixture until it reaches 300°F (hard crack stage) on a candy thermometer.
  • Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and cotton candy extract, if using. Divide into two bowls and tint one pink and the other blue.
  • Swirl the colors together in a third bowl without overmixing. Dip apples into the mixture, twisting slightly to create a marbled effect.
  • Place coated apples onto parchment paper and let them cool completely before serving.

Notes

For best results, eat the apples within 3 days. Store at room temperature, wrapped in wax paper. Do not refrigerate as the candy coating can become sticky.
