Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Candy Thermometer
  • Wax Paper

Ingredients

Popcorn Base

  • 8 cups popped popcorn freshly popped or store-bought
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Glow-in-the-Dark Candy Coating

  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/4 cup tonic water quinine-based for glow effect
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • Neon food coloring pink, blue, green, yellow, purple
  • Edible glitter or shimmer dust

Instructions

  • Spread the popped popcorn on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Drizzle with melted butter and sprinkle with salt. Set aside.
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, combine granulated sugar, corn syrup, and tonic water. Stir until sugar dissolves.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil and stop stirring. Allow it to reach 300°F (hard crack stage) using a candy thermometer.
  • Remove from heat and stir in baking soda. The mixture will bubble—this is normal!
  • Divide the hot candy mixture into separate bowls and mix in neon food coloring.
  • Pour each colored candy coating over sections of the popcorn, tossing quickly to coat.
  • While still sticky, sprinkle with edible glitter or shimmer dust.
  • Let the coated popcorn cool completely before shaping into popcorn bombs.
  • Grease your hands and shape the coated popcorn into round clusters.
  • Let the popcorn bombs set completely before serving under black light for the glowing effect.

Notes

For best results, use a black light to test the glow effect before serving. Work quickly when coating the popcorn to prevent it from hardening too soon!
