Flaky Apple Pie Bars

Ingredients
  

For the Crust

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 cup butter or vegetable shortening
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk

For the Filling

  • 8 small Granny Smith apples peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

For the Crumb Topping

  • 3/4 cup reserved dough from crust preparation chilled
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 handful crushed pecans optional
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

Instructions
 

  • In a bowl, combine flour and sugar. Cut in butter or shortening until crumbly. Stir in egg yolks and milk until a soft dough forms.
  • Reserve about 3/4 cup of dough and refrigerate. Press remaining dough into a greased 9x13-inch baking pan to form the crust.
  • In another bowl, toss sliced apples with brown sugar, granulated sugar, and cinnamon until evenly coated.
  • Spread the apple mixture evenly over the prepared crust.
  • In a small bowl, mix the reserved dough with brown sugar, granulated sugar, flour, and pecans. Crumble over the apples.
  • Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 40–45 minutes, or until golden and bubbly. Cool completely before slicing.

Notes

These bars are perfect for parties or potlucks. You can store them at room temperature for up to 2 days or in the fridge for up to 5.
